The grassroots student fulfils his mother's wish.

  • Cheung Kam To was admitted to the Department of Sport and Exercise Science, Faculty of Education, The Chinese University of Hong Kong.

A number of grassroots students have achieved good results in this year's Diploma of Education Examination and have been admitted to their favourite universities and disciplines. In fulfilment of his mother's last wish of "going to university when he grows up", Cheung Kam-to was thrilled to be admitted to the Department of Sports and Exercise Science at the Faculty of Education of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Twin brothers Lai Chun-kit and Lai Yu-ming, as well as new immigrant So Kay, who were all successful in their admission to the University of Hong Kong, all expressed their wish to participate in university activities and explore themselves in order to prepare themselves for joining the community in the future.

Candidate Cheung Kam-to, who grew up with his mother and was admitted to a children's home after losing her at the age of nine, has been fulfilling his mother's wish of "going to university when he grows up" by scoring 27 points in the best five subjects in the exams, and pursuing his dream of becoming a handball player and representing Hong Kong in competitions. He confessed that when he was choosing his dream, he hesitated between the Department of Sport and Exercise Science at the Faculty of Education of The Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Department of Physical Education of the Baptist University. After consulting teachers, churches and different people, he considered that CUHK had a better learning environment, atmosphere and connections, and he was thrilled to be admitted to HKU in the end.

    Twins enter HKU together

Twin brothers Lai Chun Kit, Lai Yu Ming and So Kei, who moved to Hong Kong from the Mainland two and a half years ago, are enrolled in HKU's Bachelor of Engineering (Biomedical Engineering), Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Finance (Asset Management and Private Banking) respectively. They are all looking forward to an enriched university life, so they will participate in different activities and competitions to broaden their horizons and explore themselves in order to prepare for the social world in the future.

The twins are enrolled in the same university, the younger brother Lai Yu-ming expects the two to continue to work hard together, and encourage each other to strive for ideal results in the university, while the older brother Lai Chun-kit half-jokingly encourages his younger brother not to pay attention to the rich life of the university to the neglect of learning.

The new school year may begin in the midst of the epidemic. So Ki, who lives in a cubicle in Kwun Tong, admitted that she does not have any electronic equipment suitable for distance learning, and that her home network does not guarantee barrier-free access to her classes; her alma mater, Mok Kwong College of English, said that its school board has set up a scholarship to support So Ki and other students with good grades to buy the computer equipment they need for their studies.
